Today is my first Mother’s Day without a Mother. It’s quite different. I walked in memory of her at the 3k Race for the Cure at the Mall of America today. It was AWESOME!!!

I am compiling and editing the photos that I am going to use for my Breast Cancer editorial.

Mom had a rotation of medications to keep her calm during the last few days. She was in a lot of pain, we suspect that the cancer went into her kidney and other soft tissue organs. The morphine helped with that pain and it also helped her breathe. Alongside the end-stage metastatic breast cancer, she had COPD. She didn’t breathe well and the lack of oxygen made her more agitated than she normally would be at this end stage. The morphine also helped normalize her breathing. She had ativan and other various medications to keep her calm.
In these days she literally had one foot in each world and I found it very interesting that she could talk with us and our family members who have passed. She even hugged people we couldn’t see. It was very reassuring to know that she was not alone, that she was not just going to die.
This photo is my view of her bedside table from the chair I sat in. Some water for her mouth, the remote, and underneath is a picture of my little brother. We showed her a lot of old pictures that week. It was nice to look at them with her one last time.
